DAY 7
INTERNET CRIME COMPLAINT CENTER
Internet Crime Complaint Center
Why Complete the IC3 form?
“The IC3 is co-sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C). IC3’s mission is to serve as a vehicle to receive, develop, and refer criminal complaints regarding the rapidly expanding arena of cyber crime. Complaints filed via this website are processed and may be referred to federal, state, local or international law enforcement or regulatory agencies for possible investigation. I understand any investigation opened on any complaint I file on this website is initiated at the discretion of the law enforcement and/or regulatory agency receiving the complaint information.”
How are complaints resolved?
“The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) thoroughly reviews and evaluates each complaint so that we may refer it to the appropriate federal, state, local, or international law enforcement or regulatory agency. Every complaint that is referred is sent to one or more law enforcement or regulatory agencies that have jurisdiction over the matter.”
Who can file a complaint?
“If you believe you are the victim of an Internet crime, or if you are aware of an attempted crime, you can file a complaint on our website. Be sure to include as much information as possible about yourself (i.e. name, email address, mailing address, etc.), the perpetrator, and the Internet crime you are reporting in order to expedite your complaint. Be sure to copy and paste the entire email, including the header information, in the complaint.”
Can Non-US citizens file a complaint?
Yes. “If one of the two parties involved is located within the United States, please feel free to file a complaint.”
You will receive a confirmation email that will provide you a complaint ID and a password to your complaint. You are then able to update the claim at a later date if more information becomes available regarding your complaint.
IC3 accepts online Internet crime complaints from either the person who believes they were defrauded or from a third party to the complainant. We can best process your complaint if we receive accurate and complete information from you. Therefore, we request that you provide the following information when filing a complaint:
- Your name
- Your mailing address
- Your telephone number
- The name, address, telephone number, and Web address, if available, of the individual or organization you believe defrauded you.
- Specific details on how, why, and when you believe you were defrauded.
- Any other relevant information you believe is necessary to support your complaint.
Our little busy bee herself, HoneyBee has compiled a tutorial on filling out the IC3 forms for you. This will probably be the most difficult challenge of the undertaking. Yet it is one of the single most important you will have to do. Click on the images to enlarge.
